Personal challenge – kayak races

First, this blog is very self-indulgent. The fewer people that read it the better  (but thanks anyway S!)

In high school and college, I paddled canoes in marathon races in the midwest. Higher education and living overseas put all that on hold (along with sailboat racing). When I moved back to the USA (Seattle), I tried to get back into both but had problems:
 – Sailboat racing (Lasers) had become much more technical and the water is too cold here.
 – There are no rivers for canoeing here. This is kayaking heaven.

To sail, I sold the new Laser I bought (still have the trailer though) and switched to the cheapest alternative I could find – thus the J/22 videos. I am very happy with that decision.

To paddle, I bought a fast kayak on the Internet and started to learn how to paddle that. I am not very good at it but given my limitations (can’t roll, don’t understand the Bernoulli principle or, thus, my wing paddle) I still finish in the middle of the fleet and sometimes beat the people who are not professionals (yes, there are kayak professionals in the world – and most live near nearby). This year, for personal reasons, I have missed every kayak race so far.  Now the sailboat racing season is drawing to a close. The purpose of this post is to motivate me (remember, this blog is all about me) to compete participate in the last kayak 3 races of the year (www.soundrowers.org). Here is my training schedule, I hope to inspire action rather than any guilt.

  1. Congrats on goals and schedules! If I jog every day that’s good… and if the dog jogs faster at the end of the month than she did at the beginning then that’s very good.

  2. And by the way, I almost asked you yesterday if you’d paddled any races this year. Thanks for answering that. I’ve put off my “goal” triathlon until this year–too many trips and weddings and “fun” last summer. I’m on a tight training schedule too, so your schedule is motivating. Participating is good. Have FUN!
