Friday, May 14th
It looked like a nice weather weekend and there was nothing on the schedule so I decided to take off for an adventure. Da da-da-dah! Ozette in the way northwest – in fact it is northwest of Forks (vampire fame). Lake Ozette is apparently the 3rd largest lake in Washington state. It is within an extension of Olympic National Park and is almost completely undeveloped. It is also the jumping off point for a famous hiking trail.
It took 5 1/2 hours to get there from Kirkland – including the ferry ride…
But I bagged a nice campsite at the north end of the lake and I started to plan my big kayak tour of the lake in the morning (after a warm-up paddle at sunset on Friday)
Vampire hummingbirds?
I never really saw hummingbirds growing up or even later. We have an occasional visitor in the backyard. The campsite was next to an overgrown stump that seemed to have competing swallow and hummingbird nests. I understand that hummingbirds are migratory and Lake Ozette is a major stop for migratory birds, but the swallows and the hummingbirds were really going at it over the campsite. And the hummingbirds were like mosquitoes at other campsites. Every time I took out something sweet I had hummingbirds around me. Strangely wonderful but scary when they are within a foot of your ear. They are noisy. Are they vampires? We are so close to Forks.
