Adventures Paddling Ozette – Day 2

Ozette – Day 2

Saturday May 15th
The morning started clear with a mild wind. Thanks to a bad night’s sleep (long story) I got a late start for my kayak adventure on the Lake. The trip I had mapped out was 17 miles and included stops at 2 islands, a river entrance and a boat-in only campsite. I packed the kayak for the 1st time – I have only used it for training and racing, never touring. Water, food, clothes, emergency stuff, etc.

I made it out of the north end of the lake with a slight tail wind, and then a surprise. A wind with whitecaps out of the SW with cross-swells from the north end. I came here to have fun, not practice survival skills.  No one else was on the lake and there are no houses or cabins, so I was on my own. I let the wind take me into a bay where I found a river. It looked interesting so I ended up paddling about a mile up stream. Dark tannin waters, stumps, moss hanging down. It felt like the bayous of Lousiana (like I would know).  I startled a big otter with sizable fish.

I got blown in to the only other access point on the lake (it was my bailout plan A). The whole area is wonderfully undeveloped.

The choice was to wait it out, kayak back, or walk. I chose the hike. It was 4.6 miles in kayak water shoes. Had some blisters in interesting places:

After driving back to get the kayak, I settled into the campsite to plan Sunday’s hike:  Toblerone  (this is a video – I am still learning WordPress)
