Cracks in our memory [early draft]

In 1973 I had a paper route, very Norman Rockwell. I always did the deliveries on my bike; summer, winter, rain. I memorized every driveway, tree, dog and even the cracks in the sidewalk. 37 years later I am visiting the neighborhood and all the houses are the same, the trees are still there – even the cracks in the sidewalk.

So many things have changed since 1973, yet this slice of my kidhood seems frozen. Memory leaks all around, yet these cracks remain — there has got to be some great metaphor here. That was not it though.
Check back later to see if I think of one.
If I remember to update this post.

PS (even the Pink and Purple People are still around!)
