Split from a sailboat

During my sunset walk last night, on a whim walked a different route and saw this boat. Suddenly all my plans for today changed.

I signed up on-line for a 4-hr afternoon sail and showed up early to make sure I could get on-board. In addition to the captain and his 1st mate there were 9 tourists like me. 7 Americans and two Canadians. One of the American couples was from Taipei.

We had decent wind for 2 hours, the rest of the time we motored. I quickly proved to the captain that I knew quite a bit about sailing so I earned the tiller for about 30 minutes.

Enjoying my life in my new Croatia cap with Split off the stern.

We sailed to an island and stopped for a bit.

I bonded with the Canadian couple and invited them over that night to my AirBNB knowing that host Tonci, was coming by again for drinks and laughs with my neighbor. Unfortunately, I missed them. but did have the drinks and laughs with Tonci and Paul. They gave me lots of inside information about life in this part of Croatia. Only my 3rd day and I feel completely at home here and don’t want to leave but it was my last night and Tonci had the place rented out for the next night.

After weighing all sorts of travel options, I decided on the one that least appealed to me when planning this trip to Europe. I booked a spot on the 11 hour ferry ride across the Adriatic to Acona Italy. Once in Italy, my vague plan was to take a train to Assisi and then rent a bike to ride in the countryside.

  1. [Now I understand why you enjoyed our Alaska adventure together–very similar, not really a plan but sort of a plan, that came together]

  2. Big yup Sandra! Our trip to Alaska is/was my preferred style of travel. The more planned the trip, the more the possibility of disappointments.
The less-planned the trip, then more open to opportunities and then surprising and possibly rewarding experiences.
To be fair, you did overdeliver in Dillingham for me because of your connections, but I did not know much about them before so it was all surprising to me. Alaska is still in my top 10, but this trip made it in too.
Now I need to relegate some other trip out of the top 10.
