It was with a sense of dread I went down to the Club on the motorscooter (Yamaha Zuma – 1300 miles @ ~ 90mpg) because I was not in the mood to deal with the personnel issues. Turns out there was only 4 of us so I took Moya by myself and left the other 3 to learn on GJ. Racing a J/22 solo is not common or recommended.
Racing summary:
8~12mph wind from the N with some oscillations west. The shore was favored. Start was west of Carillon. Longer course (~1.5 miles upwind).
Start 1 – won by a little but could not hold. I was forced west but I wanted o go there anyway to catch a west in the middle. Never happened. Others got lifted on shore. 3rd to windward and very slow downwind without spinnaker.
Start 2 – won again. Followed DTs advice and just stayed in front of DK. Worked great. Tried to cover but could not hold – again. Forced west and it did not work. Again.
Start 3 – late feint to a port start. Won by 10 boatlengths. Stayed on port and got lifted way past middle park. Tacked on layline and was only 10 boatlengths behind at windward mark. Note to self (check sail settings in video on this leg)
Why do I obsess going in mid summer? (actually it is not summer here yet – barely 70 degrees). I have a great time every time. I had my camera on and got video of a very nice evening racing a sweet boat among multimillion dollar homes.
Still trying different methods for posting video. Every time is different, isn’t it?
