If you read the last few posts you will know it was a bit of a drag to get all the way here, Wallowa Lake. This was the goal of the trip starting from when I saw the lake out a plane window from Seattle to Denver a few years ago.
Every natural lake was designed by geology, but not all lakes are the same. Oregon has two exceptional lakes (probably more than two), Crater Lake is one, well-known, aptly named and well worth the visit. Wallowa Lake is another. Much less well-known. It is the strangest lake I have seen, No actually, it is a classic glacial moraine lake but the size and location make it extraordinary. An outlier in the genre. Any trip you take in Oregon will relate to geology, a hobby of mine.
Anyway, I made it to the campground. Do not recommend the State Park except for the perfect location. Bring a camper, do not use a tent (I was using the back of the truck as a camper so I was fine). Got a very early start to avoid the wind and powerboats – paddled about 6 miles on the lake by 9 am. Nothing worth remarking on except for the dumb ospreys. 4 of them playing tag after having a healthy fish breakfast.
After kayaking I drove into the town of Joseph to steal an Internet connection and catch up on work. On the way back to the top of the lake I took some pics at a cemetery
