Wallowa Lake

If you read the last few posts you will know it was a bit of a drag to get all the way here, Wallowa Lake. This was the goal of the trip starting from when I saw the lake out a plane window from Seattle to Denver a few years ago.WallowaLakeEvery natural lake was designed by geology, but not all lakes are the same. Oregon has two exceptional lakes (probably more than two), Crater Lake is one, well-known, aptly named and well worth the visit. Wallowa Lake is another. Much less well-known. It is the strangest lake I have seen, No actually, it is a classic glacial moraine lake but the size and location make it extraordinary. An outlier in the genre.  Any trip you take in Oregon will relate to geology, a hobby of mine.

Anyway, I made it to the campground. Do not recommend the State Park except for the perfect location. Bring a camper, do not use a tent (I was using the back of the truck as a camper so I was fine). Got a very early start to avoid the wind and powerboats – paddled about 6 miles on the lake by 9 am. Nothing worth remarking on except for the dumb ospreys. 4 of them playing tag after having a healthy fish breakfast.

After kayaking I drove into the town of Joseph to steal an Internet connection and catch up on work. On the way back to the top of the lake I took some pics at a cemetery
