Adventures Travel Friday 7/2012

Friday 7/2012

First, I missed 6/2012 because I was in CA – already whined about that.

Sailed with DT and TG on GJ. Very tight start, which I lost because the wind died a minute before the start. We were 8~10 seconds behind at that point. After 35 minutes upwind we were about 5 seconds ahead, but again the wind collapsed on us at the mark and we rounded 10 seconds behind.  We got stuck with a big boat (C&C40) following us downwind and lost 2 minutes. We separated east and were 1.5 miles from our competition about 2/3 the way down. Sailing hot to the leeward mark we made almost all of it up. Only 8 boatlengths behind again. Last leg we were able to climb upwind and at one point were back in the lead but then the wind line and velocity changed in the last .5 miles and we faded back, finally losing by 18 seconds after 7 miles of racing (100+minutes) in a very fluky wind from SE/SW 3~9kts.

Sad? No way. That was a great race! DT crewed to let me drive and told me to focus on only that. It is a rare evening that I don’t have to focus on crew (spoiler alert – 8/2012 is completely different).

I have it all on egoCam but it is not that exciting on film. I may post some mark roundings and crossings later (including having to duck 70′ ex-Phoenix because their spin pole was out) but it will be only interesting from a technical point of view.
