Salad

OK, not a common subject line for an adventure but I am not the first to observe that some of the most rewarding time you can spend is in your own backyard.

As an experiment, we planted a winter crop of salad greens last November/December. Winter snows, overwork and excessive travel caused us to forget about it but then March happened and suddenly we have these weird plants in the garden where we usually plant our spring peas.

For the last 10 days we have been having very fresh salad every night (picked one minute before dinner). So many greens that this evening we invited our neighbors to take away some spinach, kale and chard. We have another 10 days supply.  Now we know and are definitely doing this again next year – with a focus on the tasty lettuce. It really is better when fresh!  (I might even try asparagus)
