Just a post on the status of the kayak. After applying the 1st layer of (very expensive) varnish last month I sanded for about 4 hours. Today I waited as the thermometer slowly inched up to 50 degrees at 2pm (exactly as NOAA NWS said it would), so on went the 2nd layer of varnish, top and bottom. Learned: two-part varnish requires a high-end brush to apply well. This stuff is toxic – 3 hours after finishing it is almost overpowering to be within even 20 feet of the shed. Any insects that were there are certainly gone now.
