Very long kayak race today. Had a choice of the short course or long course. I chose the long course. Weather was the definition of benign – almost no wind, cool, cloudy with occasional drizzle, very flat water. Stats:
- 14.3 miles around Mercer Island. The longest kayak race in my life.
- My goal was to finish in under 3 hrs and my secret desire was to beat 2h45m. My time was 2h38m even though I missed the start – I was still on shore at the gun because I forgot my skirt.
- Even though I did very well by my standards, I was actually the last competitor today. My first true last. Slower boats (and competitors) chose the short course – the boats on the long course were (all but one) faster boats. Participating.
- Maybe the most interesting stat was that I lost almost 5 pounds during the race. Most of that is water but I wonder how many calories I burned.

Congrats on beating your secret goal! I will have to remember that quote: “Missed the start because i forgot my skirt.” Thanks for the post and the picture!
