The last few years I have posted reports of my sailboat racing as slogs. I sailed 29 days last year (I also canoe and kayak so on the water was more) but I think slogging like that is over because my sailing horizons are changing. So far this year I have competed in over 50 races – most of them on my new RC toy boat, but today was in a serious 44′ ocean boat. 9 crew and all are busy at some point. As tactician my strategy was correct but my concept of boat speed was off by a factor of at least 10. The transition from very small boat to big boat was too much, especially in light winds.
We did lousy in the 1st race but started and sailed above our potential in the 2nd. Wind topped at 4mph today so it was not challenging to sail the boat, just to decided where to go.
I will still be racing the J/22 every chance I get this summer.
The picture below is of the same type of boat but ours is hull #1.
Ocean boat? On the lake, I presume (?) That much time on the water — good for you!
