Sailing tactics (22′ vs 70′)

One of my many fans remarked on one of my (too many) SLOG posts that I race a 22′ boat against, amongst others, a 70′ boat. That happens in the Friday races when we are the smallest boat on the course. Our tactics are usually dominated by how to maintain (or not lose) clean air with so many bigger boats, especially at the marks. Turns out that someone got a good picture of this mismatch last Friday.  That is us on the little boat with the red/white/blue sail. Look at the difference in the size of sail – we have our huge spinnaker up because we are going downwind.

As we crossed paths with the 70′ footer (biggest boat, but others are just as fast in the 40~50′ range), my crewmate commented that there is more weight on the their windward rail (in people) than our boat weighs altogether with crew70
