Adventures Sailing Friday 1/2012

Friday 1/2012

Friday night racing returns. A brief hailstorm with the threat of lightning delayed our prep a little but did not stop us. Spring storms are very localized.

My technical sailing log:
Went with DT and DW on GJ in very consistent SSE wind from 6 building to 10. Fun start though we lost it. DS forced Bullet into the committee boat 5 feet in front of us – we started 3rd but it was close. Went right, others covered us so we went back left and gained 60 boat lengths and rounded 1st. I was foredeck but did not rig the spin (hail excuse) and 4 things were wrong which lead to a twist and a poor set. After a 35 minutes downwind leg we had lost only 12 boat lengths, were in 2nd and had a good shot but then we could not sail high and ended up losing. Much discussion about why on the last leg but only later did we get that it was mainly the jib fairlead because the wind built. My call, so though I called almost all the shifts right, I messed up on jib trim. Still…a close race, every boat was in 1st at one point and there was a spectacular sunset (spring storms). New sails are great (pat myself on the back for that at least).
